Getting active out of doors is both motivating and fun, just take in that view.
I had to giggle a little when Sita first sent me these photos, you see I have a really expressive face- I have to concentrate on keeping a straight face about 90% of the time. With every instructor or PT I have ever had, there are always comments about my facial expressions during a workout. Sometimes this has sent them into fits of laughter, so you can only imagine HOW MUCH I was trying NOT to pull any expression during this shoot.
For the record I don’t use equipment like this often- if it is there I will, but I don’t go to the gym- I tried it, it was okay, but I prefer to exercise outside. We are so lucky that most Australians live close to the beach, or a lake or river along which we can run, practice yoga, do a group fitness class etc. There is a direct link to a large body of water and inspiration for me, so it is a good fitness motivator.
When I first started running a few years ago it was back in the Adelaide hills where I could run through the pine forests along a sand horse trail, up and down the hills, along a creek bed and wind up on top of a hill with an incredible panoramic view out to the ocean (albeit, far, far away). Later when I lived at Scarborough Beach for a bit, running along the ocean front was so stunning, I was really spoilt there. However, even if stepping into your yard I feel like working outside is rewarding, you don’t NEED the ocean. I often practice yoga on my front porch. I do get some looks from our neighbours, but it is no different than kids playing in their front yard across the street. I could be worried about what people thought, but really, nobody is looking at you- they have their own stuff to think about.
I like to have a good jumper like this fleece one to keep warm in winter and tend to go with a size or two larger for a sloppier fit. I am not usually one for colour, but this maroon is just so nice for the cooler months to come.
So, this weekend, embrace the outdoors, do not hide away inside and fear not the laughter of your weird workout facial expressions (believe me, mine are weirder!).
