How to wear crop tops and not feel like a teen! Are you game to try it this summer?
CAN I REALLY PULL OFF A CROP TOP AT 35?
For years, I had one crop top in my wardrobe. It is still one of my favourite tops, thanks to it being black, sculptural and super flattering. It’s from Ellery, one of my favourite designers and I managed to get it at one of the sales she had a couple of years ago. I’ve worn it to fashion week (see back here) and to a ball with trousers when I didn’t want to wear a gown. Though this is one of my favourite tops, I didn’t have much confidence until recently in buying any other crop tops.
I didn’t like the idea of having to stop and worry about my midriff being on show- or god forbid my belly button! I mean, how old do you think you are?! Right? Well, though that is sharing more than I care to, I do wear a lot of high waisted bottoms, so I decided to revisit the crop top. Age, after all, is just a number and since I’ve not had kids and keep in shape, my midriff is still in pretty good shape, or so I hope to think. Having regular bouts of colds and flu’s lately has meant I haven’t been in my normal workout routine! I hope to get back to it asap!
HOW TO WEAR CROP TOPS
The way that I decided to tackle the crop top is to stick to wearing it with high waisted bottoms. These, are basically a mix of mom-style jeans or denim shorts and skirts, paper-bag waist pants and shorts and high waist slip skirts. This way, I don’t show my stomach, or if I am showing a little, it still covers the belly button area, so I feel less exposed. Over this, I can throw on a blazer, army style jacket, leather moto jacket or denim jacket. All of my basics!
So far, I have stuck to crop tops that are more on the fitted side, or are t-shirts that flare out at the bottom just a little. Teaming them with a high waisted bottom can actually end up looking very chic and elegant. I have some looks I shot that I’ll share soon enough that I thought were perfect for an elegant summer evening. Alternatively, jeans and sandals, as I am wearing here are casual but still chic.
ROADTESTING THE CROP TOP
Yesterday, after a beautiful breakfast, where I was wearing a crop top, jeans, and a blazer, I had to head into the city to pick up something for Mario (aka a belated birthday present from last year… almost a year late!). It had gotten warm, so I decided to ditch the blazer. I was walking around at first feeling a little self-conscious, hoping that I wasn’t baring too much. After a few sneaks into windows as I was passing by (yes, I was mildly paranoid) I realised, there wasn’t anything to be stressed about. The key with crop tops is to be confident, stand up straight and just relax.
So, if you see me in a few more over the summer, I guess you can say, I have decided to be braver and chill!
