How to embrace a colour that you never thought that you could. As with each season, I am slowly bringing more colour back into my wardrobe, right now it is all about RED! Red is my new neutral!

THAT TIME MY CLOSET EXPLODED
If I go back a few years, my closet was full to the brim of vintage and Australian designer clothes that screamed pretty loudly with clashing print and colour. Don’t get me wrong, I generally styled these back with a basic black tee, jean or blazer. At some point though, I looked at it all and felt overwhelmed. I got sick of prints far too quickly and felt my eye needed to rest.
Hence the overhaul. The prints were sold off, or donated away. My wardrobe more than halved, I lived out of a suitcase or two for months, relying on a capsule wardrobe. I was all neutrals all the time.
THEN THINGS GOT A LITTLE ‘TOO’ PLAIN
Years on, looking into my closet of denims, neutrals and the occasional blue dress, there was a distinct lack of print and colour. I was pretty content with this for a couple of years, but of late had craved a little something more. Always dressing in black was not reflective of my mood. Looking to my style influences and observing street style on my travels, I realised that one or two colours (and prints) were missing.
Enter dusty pink, burgundy, olive and mustard. Though, admittedly, those I adorned like a neutral anyway. Still, something was missing. A colour I never imagined wearing again.
WHY RED IS MY NEW NEUTRAL
I avoided wearing red like there was something wrong with it. I genuinely felt it made my skin look blotchy and pigmented. Apart from a red lipstick, I left it well alone.
While in France I could not help but notice how much red is embraced as much as blue. In fact, for them, it is a neutral. Given their National colours, I totally understand why. A pop of colour like red mixes things up. It draws the eye. Instead of being an overbearing colour, they style it back with vintage washed denims, black and white striped tees, basket bags… the list goes on. How to style a new colour? Think of it as something to give your neutrals an extra punch, or wear it like a neutral.
So, here I am embracing a colour I never thought I would again. Heck, I am even embracing print too. Expect to see a little more of this new neutral around here.
And, never say never, yeah?
What do you guys think? Do you wear red? Is there a colour that you avoid? Are you over seeing the basic black and white outfits we saw saturate the market last year? Let me know below!
