A couple of weeks ago I was invited to try out a Lagree fitness class at the LaFit Studio in Subiaco. I had at the time just finished a round of pilates classes and assumed that the Lagree machines were the same thing, only a lot bigger and more scary looking. The night before our first class I was actually convinced it would kill me and didn’t sleep a wink.

Joined by my fellow founding #FitClubPerth members (more on that exciting venture soon including how you can #jointheclub), we headed in for an early morning class to find that it was tough, fun and of course not at all as scary as I had imagined. Combining strength, endurance, cardiovascular, balance, flexibility and core training, the 45 minute megaformer workout is short, tough and fun.

I did not notice the time as I kept up with the positions and repetitions. The studio has eight megaformer machines (the only machines in Perth- so this is a workout like no other in town), of which there are more than 300 exercises. I am for some reason really into lunges and planking, so the deep lunges and pike to plank moves were my favourites but there are so many good moves that really allow you to work your muscles and build your core. Using the megaformer is all about slowly controlling your movements, so there is no damage to your joints and the movements are continuous so you don’t get a rest in-between. This makes the time fly by as you shake and start to sweat and burn a ton of calories. You can set the springs (similar to a pilates reformer) to adjust the resistance levels that are best for you for each move.

If you have done pilates before, this is a really great class to step into to try something more intense, you work the whole body and the instructors give you plenty of attention and correct you if you are a little bit off. The LaFit Studio has only been running for a few months and classes are already getting full, so now is the time to jump on board and try it out.
