My old self-adopted uniform was much dorkier, but the belt is to stay. How a belt changes everything.
THE REALLY OLD UNIFORM WHERE I LOOKED LIKE JESS FROM NEW GIRL -SORTA
Many years ago, I used to wear this repeated self adopted uniform of cute graphic tees – usually made by my arty friends, sometimes by myself, vintage high waisted skirts- often pleated, ballet flats and a vintage belt. In what could be considered a damn shame or a blessing, I can’t locate any photos to share with you here. I did go looking, but they weren’t on Facebook or on a nearby hard drive. So, trust me when I say that was my uniform. It actually resembled something similar to Jess in New Girl. I’m vaguely rewatching the series (in the background) and I see a phase of bright, colourful, feminine dressing that I no longer relate to.
NEW BELT, WHO DIS?
From that time, I have kept a couple of tan vintage high waisted belts, which I’d collected from thrift shops and vintage stores. But I rarely remember to wear them. And it occurred to me that I probably needed a cooler, more masculine update. I opted for a black one, with rivet details and a more simple tan leather belt (without any buckle flourish). While I have yet to remember to wear the tan one (I have to work on this! Perhaps I’m storing my belts too far out of the way), I’ve certainly worn the black masculine one. You can expect I will keep on wearing it too, as I love it worn over blazers and coats.

HOW A BELT CHANGES EVERYTHING
Investing in a good quality belt- be it brand new or vintage, can be something that re-invents your outfits for years. I love the simple affordable ones from Boden and the selection of high and low options on Shopbop. Net-A-Porter and FarFetch have a lot of luxury options too if you are really wanting to invest.
Wear a belt to draw in the waist of a dress, over a jumper or knit or over blazers and coats. They really re-invent something you have worn over and over in a fresh way. Take this Silk Laundry slip dress that I’ve been wearing over and over for YEARS. It looks fresh and cool as hell with a black belt, I’m not sure why I didn’t get onto one sooner.
You can always belt a graphic tee and a pleated skirt, but that’s not a look I plan to drag back out in a hurry. Well, not on me, personally. Did I mention the pleated skirts were often tartan? And I wore them with tights? And sometimes the graphic tees said things like “You were in my dream last night”. Ahuh, it really was dorky. Actually, I was really dorky.
