FEMALES OF THE FUTURE

Why this slogan tee is more than a marketing ploy and why feminism is relevant in fashion.

“YOU CAN NOT BE SERIOUS?! RIGHT?”

Fashion can be a topic of ridicule with a lot of my friends.

I don’t mind this because, fashion and style is my thing. Actually, friends making fun of me for it keeps me grounded. Not many are intentionally mean about it, generally it is just a world so far removed from their own and they don’t completely comprehend it.

Being in the world of fashion, with some of the crazy price points, styles and excess, you have to really know yourself and what you stand for. This is why I am constantly re-evaluating what I love and what I will say yes or no to. Personally, I think if you fall for every new thing that comes along, it can leave you feeling used.

FASHION INTERPRETED, WITH PRACTICAL FILTERS

When I put together stories for Inspiring Wit, I am intentionally adopting a voice that navigates fashion trends, interprets runway collections and recommends style advice. I like to do this through a couple of filters. As someone who does not like to spend money on a piece only to wish I had not done so some months later, I filter trends through longevity and flexibility. If I go to recommend something, it has to be worth the cash put down.

Each piece has to be wearable with multiple wardrobe staples. Honestly, though I like to take risks sometimes, I prefer not to give myself or some friends more reason to ridicule my choices when it comes to styling. Most of the time.

It is also in my nature to encourage just a little something that will turn heads or make a statement.

FEMALES OF THE FUTURE

This ‘females of the future’ t-shirt spoke to me a few weeks ago.

I get that adopting a t-shirt with what could feel like an empty slogan, depending on ones view, can be interpreted as a marketing ploy. Personally, I like that the ideas of feminism (which to me generally translates to equality among everyone, not singularly based on gender) have hit the mainstream.

I would like to think that they will naturally challenge more people to consider what feminism means. The more it is considered and the more it is relevant, I hope will then lead to it no longer needing to be an issue. Consciousness raising can only be a good thing. Even if that comes via a slogan t-shirt (hopefully chosen for a reason, not solely because it seemed trendy or cool).

With more awareness, ideally, we will see more seeds of transformation being planted for the future. As someone who communicates daily with people from across the world, I am forever inspired to hear of the challenges and breakthroughs being experienced by everyday women who share their experiences. For this reason, among others, the Females of the Future slogan stood out to me.

MAKE A STATEMENT

Fighting for your ideas, for your voice to be heard, for the future of our communities and the generations who will claim it after us is relevant. As such, I don’t mind putting my opinion out there, open for ridicule and the natural misinterpretation which is inevitable when wearing a statement. Giving people something more meaningful to think about, is a wonderful thing about fashion.

What do you think of the feminism slogan tees? Love or hate? Got an opinion? Share it with us! Does anyone else feel ridiculed for their interests in fashion? Do you mock people for their clothing? I want to hear your thoughts below!
