Break the rules. Layer, stick to comfort and follow your own path.
Yes, I do have an office job. I really enjoy wearing corporate clothing (my way), it gives me a chance to feel a little dressed up and it also means I can appreciate days in my casual gear. Don’t think for a second though that it means I follow all of the rules. Take this day last week for example, it’s one of the more feminine looks, (I often like to tread the lines of androgyny with my corporate looks by adding menswear) thanks to the lace and beachy hair. On a side note: It also occurred to me recently that I don’t shoot looks wearing glasses all that much, yet I wear them all the time. So here you go, spectacle wearers!
For me it is all about making sure you can feel confident, comfortable and yourself in the workplace- after all, you are there to make your mark, so it is crucial to maintain your identity and clothing can help you to do this. Not only does it communicate for you, if ever in doubt, you are able to look down and get a reminder of who/ what you are, which you can’t do so much in a uniform or stock standard look. Heading into the cooler months I like to layer a dress over tights, a warm wool jumper and blazer or coat.
I love to wear ankle boots and while working prefer to avoid stiletto heels on the carpet (yeah our office has carpet), so these comfortable super cushy boots from Hush Puppies have become my latest faves. Thought Hush Puppies were just for older people? Respect your elders! Kidding, but Hush Puppies actually have a rather cool history. They were worn by Warren Beatty and the “Rat pack” and were believed to have saved the life of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards when he accidentally touched his guitar against an ungrounded microphone at a 1965 concert in Sacramento, California. Knocked unconscious, medics believed that the crepe soled Hush Puppies shoes that Richards was wearing insulated him – and saved the future of rock `n roll. Bet you didn’t know that huh?
This week, if you don’t do it already, I challenge you to inject a little more of ‘you’ into your corporate looks. Be it with a touch of menswear, messy beach hair, layering one of your fave ‘non work’ dresses or just wearing a boot. Let me know how you go!
