My staycation at the best hotel in Australia, Como The Treasury in Perth.
COMO THE TREASURY
Let’s talk about the most incredible hotel I stayed at in 2020. Como the Treasury hotel was awarded #1 Best Hotel in Australia and New Zealand with a near-perfect score of 99.11 at the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers Choice Awards 2016 & 2017. The hotel was also voted #2 Best Hotel in the World, the only Australian hotel included in the Top 50 list. In 2020 New York-based tourism magazine, Travel + Leisure voted it the best hotel in Australia as well.
Needless to say, it was a staycation we had been looking forward to for some time. We stayed for two nights for Mario’s birthday.
Como The Treasury resides within Perth’s revitalized 19th-century State Buildings. Once housing the land titles office, the treasury, and the city’s first post office, the structure underwent a meticulous decade-long restoration by Kerry Hill Architects, returning the iconic complex to its former Victorian glory. You can see in the photos, it is incredible with immaculate attention to detail.
THE INCREDIBLE BATHROOMS
Standout room features include oversized windows, custom-made furnishings, expansive open bathrooms with heated travertine stone flooring and German deep-soaking Kaldewei Duo freestanding bathtubs. I was in heaven! How incredible is this bathroom?
Plenty of luxury home spa and bathroom ideas for a design in here too. I am looking at home builds so this is on my mind even more than it usually might be.
COMO SHAMBHALA SPA AND WELLNESS
Como The Treasury is a 48 room contemporary luxury hotel in Perth’s newly revitalised historic heart. Occupying state buildings dating from the mid 19th century, Como The Treasury opens up the city with new experiences by way of two restaurants, a bar, and world renowned Como Shambhala wellness therapies.
I’ve been lucky to experience the stunning Como Shambhala spa and the yoga space over the years. I detailed those visits on the blog before, click the link to check out my spa experience. I’ve dinned at both Wildflower and Post on numerous occasions, including beautiful events and functions.
DINNER AT WILDFLOWER
Wildflower is an elegant, contemporary space on the hotel’s fourth floor, set within a rooftop area. Lunch and dinner offerings, served against a backdrop of sweeping views over the Swan River, come from a farmer-and-forager-driven menu of dishes revolving around the indigenous six seasons. Executive Chef Kim Brennan has created a menu of contemporary cuisine using the finest Western Australian produce.
I decided not to take my camera along this time for our dinner. Needless to say, the food was delicious. I have shared the space on the blog before, click on here to check out a lunch at Wildflower. Before we took the elevator up to the fourth floor, Mario and I decided to shoot a couple of fun photos. You can see these above. Clearly, we were in a great mood and I think, dressed nicely for the birthday dinner!
THE HOTEL POOL
Heading to the 20m travertine hotel pool on every chance I had was high on my priority list during this stay. It did not disappoint. The most stunning indoor hotel pool in Perth is overlooked by the gym and offers a sauna (though this was not available during our stay).
The windows look out onto the rooftop of the Perth Town Hall, and Hay Street, but it is entirely tranquil and relaxing. I still think of this part of the hotel the most. I’d love to visit more regularly! Waking up at 5 am, a 30-minute swim before breakfast was absolutely a dream.
Of course, over the years since its reopening, I have photographed all around the stunning State Buildings and inside the common areas of Como The Treasury. I thought I’d include a few of those images here, to give you a greater impression of this one of a kind hotel.
MY FINAL WORD
I’ve had the pleasure of staying in amazing hotels across Australia, Africa, Europe, and Asia. The one that will stick with me the most will be Como the Treasury. This was not a stay organised as a press trip, during which often I get to experience the best of the best of a hotel. The staff had no idea I’d write a blog post or review, so I will just put that out there. However, I felt just as well treated as I have done on some of those luxury hotel press stays. True, nobody was bending over backward to create anything extra memorable, the hotel was simply marvelous as it was.
The staff were lovely. The food was incredible. We ate our breakfasts at Post, Como the Treasury’s all-day Osteria. Filling up for most of the day. I adored the room, the common spaces and would absolutely love to check back in again anytime. Need to see more? Can I blame you? No, I cannot. I vlogged our stay for those who are extra curious, please find the vlog on my YouTube channel here.
