The best in culture, beauty, fashion, wellness and health for 2016 that you must try!

ASOS hat,

I have been wanting to bring this to you for weeks! I have been searching for the best new things to try in 2016 across beauty, fashion, wellness, fitness and culture!

I just wanted to start by offering my thanks for your patience over the past few weeks as we had experienced so many issues with our web-host provider. I was getting about 12 emails a day to tell me our site was down (sometimes for over an hour at a time! Eeek!) but I am happy to say we have a new host and upgraded to keep up with the growing demand. (I secretly love that so many wonderful people are visiting us, causing the site to go into a bit of a meltdown! Welcome all!!). Without further ado, find some of my curated ‘best of’s’ for 2016 below…

xx Jenelle

Earlier this year I was introduced to a new Perth based company Maslow and Co. who offer a unique membership bringing members the best in beauty from around the world. Delivered every second month, a cleverly curated box full of beauty and wellness products from a chosen country offers members the chance to try samples created by some of the most innovative and inspiring brands from each focus destination. Travel and beauty? That is what I am all about!

The products are not mainstream, nor necessarily boutique; rather they’re premium, up-and-coming brands that are yet to be fully discovered. I have been using some of the products from the first Australian delivery earlier this year for a while now (the Mieux Derma Grain and Grit Exfoliant was incredible! I love the tea tree oil scent! And the Rohr Remedy Boab and Rosehip Oil is beautiful.) and have just gotten in the second U.K. themed box. I am excited most to give the Mauli Rituals Grow Strong Hair Oil a try- as you can tell, I have a lot of hair and I hate how split it gets! I will try anything to destress my locks! I have also heard a lot about organic brand ila spa, so I am looking forward to trying out the shampoo and conditioner.

Having a whole new and undiscovered range of brands to try from around the world is pretty exciting stuff, as a beauty junkie, it is awesome to find new and unique brands. The best of the world brought to my door is something I am happy to accept! The sample sizes aren’t simply sachets either, each box contains decent sized product trials so you can actually feel them out on your skin/ hair and order more through the site if you wish.

Blackmores Superfoods

I’ve been using ‘superfoods’ for a lot of years now. Many people have told me I am wasting money, but honestly, when I am not using them, I can feel a huge difference. When I found out that Blackmores had released a range, I wanted to give them a try. I had never tried a blueberry powder or coconut water powder before, these fast became favourites!

Yogi and all round bendy inspirational Perth woman Amanda Bisk had been using them and had this to offer:

“Move your body, feed it amazing healthy food, Make time to distress and clear your mind. These are the 3 things that I live by everyday. The important thing to remember is that our lifestyle is what we create with our daily habits (not what we do every once in a while).”

Blackmores have a fun wellbeing check online in which you can see how you are doing and rank with fellow Australians, and give you tips on where you can improve your own wellness. The wellbeing check offers personalised insight into your overall health – mental, physical and emotional. It’s a great way to get more in touch with your holistic state of health and ensure you’re taking time out (even just the few minutes it takes to complete!) for yourself. My main concerns are stress related, which is nothing new for me. I am learning to take time out to relax, work through breathing and my yoga practice and it is definitely working for me!

All products in the range are GMO-free, dairy-free and vegan, and have no added artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners. What really separates these products from others on the market is the ‘Nature Boost’ injection – ingredients derived from natural sources containing nutrients such as vitamin C, antioxidants and magnesium.

So far I have been adding either the Wild Blueberry Blend or Coconut Water to water to rehydrate and making up some Matcha Green Tea. I do have a few recipes created by the Bondi Harvest guys to give a whirl, watch for these on Snapchat and Instagram! (Find the recipes here).

Classpass & Nimble Activewear

I talked about Classpass in one of my recent posts, find the lowdown on what it is all about and where I have been visiting using it back here. I am still loving the classes I am trying and have been attending a few selected studios regularly enough now to start noticing some real improvements in both my strength and flexibility. For me it is not at all about building muscle mass but increasing my strength, range of movement and feeling good. The time out to enjoy the classes is seriously rewarding.

Nimble Activewear are a new brand to me and one that I am super happy with! The quality of the pants (pictured here) is better than a lot of other brands in terms of the feel and technology! I have my eye on their new black smoke print set… so cool!!

Closet Wise & Misano Shoes

Closet Wise is a brand new online boutique offering chic, beautiful and quality pieces at an affordable price. There are designs to suit a wide age bracket- from things to wear casually or for a cocktail event. This jumpsuit was a very comfortable breezy piece to wear in the heat wave days we had recently! I spoke to founder Eva to find out more about the company:

“We started Closet Wise with the aim of providing Australian women with well-made, on-trend designs that was accessible to the masses. We believe quality fashion shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg and are keen to challenge the status quo. We offer worldwide shipping and free shipping within Australia – no minimum orders!”

I had heard of Misano Shoes but only recently noticed the range of quality local and imported shoes for both summer and winter. Based out of Perth, I visited the studio to find rooms full of incredible shoes! I am a huge fan of espadrilles and landed on these leather lace up versions (worn here and pictured above), but spotted about ten other pairs I could easily see myself rotating! The espadrille is just such a good, comfortable shoe! I love to travel with them too as they flatten and aren’t heavy. Win! All of the Misano shoes are designed for longevity rather than based on short lived trends, which means it is an excellent place to score classic, quality shoes you can rely on in your capsule wardrobe.

2016 Alliance Française French Film Festival

Returning to Luna Palace Cinemas for its 27th incarnation, the 2016 Alliance Française French Film Festival is ready to mesmerise with a dazzling line-up of superb contemporary features, a timeless classic and a fabulous new programme strand that will showcase 5 of France’s premier television series. I go to this festival every year, and see between 6-13 films each season! I look forward to it as soon as it ends! Screening around the country from the 1st of March till the 4th of May, head through to see the dates for each city.

This year I am looking forward to: A Perfect Man, Directed by Yann Gozlann, Microbe & Gasoline, Directed by Michel Gondry (I LOVE HIM!!!), Lolo Directed by Julie Delpy (I think I fell for Julie in the 90s and have been hanging out for anything she has done since!), The Brand New Testament, Directed by Jaco Van Dormael and Chic! Directed by Jérôme Cornuau. Finally, closing night is set to be a real treat!

A fully restored version of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 classic, Contempt (Le Mépris) starring the ravishing Brigitte Bardot at the height of her career, will screen on Closing Night.

Sculpture By The Sea

Sculpture by the Sea, the annual outdoor sculpture exhibition, will return to Perth’s Cottesloe Beach from 4 – 20 March 2016 and to Bondi for its 20th Anniversary from 20 October to 6 November 2016.

One of my must visits each year, the exhibition will feature works from over 75 artists from across the globe. International artists from as far as China, Peru, Czech Republic, Japan and the United States of America will feature work alongside local sculptors. The spectacular exhibition stretches along the famous white sands of Cottesloe beach overlooking the Indian Ocean. Mark the free event in your calendars!

WOMADelaide 2016

WOMADelaide 2016 is set to transform Adelaide’s Botanic Park from 11–14 March 2016. We are going to be in town and excited to attend at least one day of the exciting lineup! For me some of the highlights of the program include France’s St Germain, Ladysmith Black Mambazo (South Africa), Mojo Juju (Australia), Violent Femmes (USA), Eska (UK), Ester Rada (Ethiopia/ Israel) and so many more!!

WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie said that having a musical revolutionary such as St Germain headlining the Sunday night of the 20th edition of WOMADelaide in 2016 is a major coup for the festival.

“St Germain is a unique artist whose music has transcended the past two decades and hosting him at WOMADelaide brings a new level of excitement to the festival program,” said Mr Scobie

St Germain joins  an already remarkable lineup of artists including the Grammy Award-winning Angélique Kidjo, the UK’s Mercury Prize nominated and politically charged Asian Dub Foundation, the stunning Israeli-born Ethiopian singer-actress Ester Rada and the acclaimed Tex-Mex indie band Calexico.
