Now that I have introduced you to Fit Club Perth, we recently collaborated with Lululemon Athletica and Xtend Barre to try our luck at the barre.
I have never actually been to a dance class before. (This is not including the jazz classes we HAD to do during my Uni degree when I was training to be an actor many many years ago- but we spent a lot of that time doing yoga and dancing around to David Bowie, which was fun, but required very little focus.) I grew up figure skating but even in my group classes, I worked independently and the coach rotated to focus on each student as we trained. Somehow though, I really wanted to try Xtend Barre– and as I am flexible, I thought I would be good at it.
I could not have been MORE WRONG!
I SUCKED! Hahaha, I went to two weeks of classes, and never once understood what was going on, what the instructor was saying, I could not remember what first or second position was nor did I ever seem to hear when they said “tempo change”. Of course that didn’t matter too much because I could hardly keep up for trying to work out what we were meant to be doing at the time to go any faster at it.
So, many of you have been asking, having seen me talk about it on Instagram, ‘What is Xtend Barre??’ Xtend Barre is like a combination of Pilates and dance, mostly at the pace of an aerobics class with the same sort of music (not the classical I had imagined!) it combines excersizes from ballet, pilates and dance to create a fast paced muscle sculpting workout. I felt my muscles shake and burn so quickly and each class seemed to incorporate different moves. Enhancing flexibility, core strength and balance, we are encouraged to stretch out that little bit further and extend as much as we can. I felt my posture improve as more core strengthened and overall felt great having made the effort to focus as much as possible. I feel like keeping up was a good ‘brain gym’ workout for my mind which is often over stimulated with computer screens and a never ending Instagram feed.
As funny as I am sure it was for everyone in the classes I went to to watch as I remained one step behind them all the way through (seriously every time my arms were up, everyone else’s would be down and vice versa) I did enjoy the classes and noticed I improved, a little. I say again, that I noticed the improvement, but I have no doubt that no one else would have noticed (particularly as I pulled my neck muscles in what ended up being my last class!).
If you want to give Xtend Barre a try, they run an offer with unlimited classes for a fortnight at $49.00 which is just such a good deal! It is an excellent workout, fast paced and fun, you will feel that lengthening and strength. Throw yourself into it and enjoy the challenge.
For our Fit Club Perth and Xtend Barre collaboration we also teamed up with Lululemon Perth (you know how much I love Lulu! Find my last post here) who made me feel very at home in these movement-to-the-street threads. I shared my love for this backpack on Instagram (@inspiringwit) a few weeks back and I am told they were sold out within days, so unfortunately I can only point you in the way of the same backpack in purple (linked below). The bag is excellent with pockets for my laptop, phone, my gym gear and a lot more. It’s my current go-to, so don’t miss out on one!
