While some of the winter layering options are obvious, there are some tips and tricks to keep things interesting.
WINTER LAYERING 101
Layering is the obvious key to dealing with winter and your wardrobe. But there are a few key tricks to keep your style interesting. After all, if you feel anything like I do about winter, the fashion is the best part. Though a bowl of soup on a cold rainy day is pretty good too.
Start with a denim base.
Be it black denim, a classic blue or even white, I tend to find I reach for denim all winter long. You can opt for a crop and layer it up with an interesting tights pattern underneath as I did here. Though the peek-a-boo fishnet thing is not really for every one, it keeps things interesting.
Accessorise with interesting shoes and a beautiful bag.
A high gloss patent boot, or metallic shoe give something extra to lift a winter look. Honestly I have talked about my love for metallics enough (find the four ways to wear post back here). Though I can reiterate that on those days I pull on my most basic denim and white t-shirt looks, metallic shoes offer that extra kick to keep things polished.
BONUS TIP: Plus any girl knows that one way to deflect attention away from your face (I say this only as style advice for the days you are ill with a head cold and would rather be back in bed!) is to draw attention to your feet. Trust me!
As for the bag? Well, I love to make sure I have an interesting yet classic bag that will ideally fit a little more during the colder months. Winter tends to bring with it more things that I need to carry around just in case. I need more room to stash a pair of gloves, a scarf and tissues. I am loving this tan bucket bag from the Australian brand XNihilo. Their minimal designs are both unique and practical.
Pick essential monochrome or neutral pieces.
While I love seeing people wear a bright colour coat, I find I reach for my neutral or monochrome pieces more often. Actually I just donated one of my coloured coats to charity as I realised I wasn’t wearing it and someone out there needed it more than me. I am generally going to re-wear the same few coats over and over all winter, so I want them to go with as many of my outfits as possible.
Instead, I can brighten things up with red lipstick, a scarf or beanie. Though, neutrals work there too.
Wrap it all up with a scarf.
Obvious, but grab one on your way out of the house. If I learnt anything from the French, I learned that a scarf just adds an extra level of chic to any outfit. Winter layering is all about making sure you are warm outside, but can peel off and be comfortable inside too.
I vowed this year to FINALLY get one of the Acne Studios scarves I have been lusting after for years. Still yet to get one, but something tells me this winter weather will be here for a few weeks yet.
