We all know the magic powers of the little black dress, but sometimes it needs a fresh update. This chic number is the updated little black dress.
IT IS BECAUSE OF AUDREY HEPBURN
Growing up, like many women (though probably few young teens), I looked to Audrey Hepburn as an inspiration. I watched her films again and again. There were even times that I advertised in the newspaper looking for copies of biographies about her. I will never forget that someone called me one Sunday afternoon for my address and later that week sent me an out of print bio in the mail. So kind and generous! I still have it, along with my collection of Audrey films and books. She graced my walls when other teens likely had posters of some heart throb.
While the fascination with her has mostly remained, albeit a little quieter, I do recall when driving unexpectedly through Switzerland, I secretly googled to see if her family home was on our route (or nearby). Sadly, it wasn’t. As a role model goes, she spoke multiple languages and later discovered that her media attention could be channeled into humanitarian efforts raising awareness with UNICEF. Those two things alone impressed me immensely as a teen.
Of course, it was her style that originally caught my attention. Hence the love for classic AH pieces like the LBD.
THE UPDATED LITTLE BLACK DRESS
Why do we love a little black dress? Elegant and simple, a classic black dress can take you anywhere. It is appropriate for almost any situation and has saved women around the world time and stress for decades. If in doubt, drag a LBD out, throw on comfortable but chic shoes and go. Job done.
The modern little black dress is one thing we all need in our closet. And when I say one thing, of course, I tend to mean, a couple or more. Different occasions call for a different essential, right?
This logic is something I hope I share with a few of you.
KEY POINTS FOR UPDATING THE LBD
The little black dress has to be flattering, structured but fluid enough to move in comfortably and something than can be dressed up or down. Since this year is all about statement sleeves, consider finding a dress with this feature. Always look for a fabric that adds to the dress. I can not stress enough the importance of making sure a LBD is excellent quality. You can skimp on plenty of other things, but, as this is a dress you should aim to wear again and again it is vital to invest.
This beautiful dress from Australian label Third Form you may just see me in more than once. It ticked all of the updated little black dress boxes!
