Perth finally welcomes our first Uniqlo store with open arms! What I picked up and my tips for the best buys to update your wardrobe.
OH HELLO, UNIQLO
As you guys might recall, I am a huge fan of Uniqlo. Each year since they launched online in Australia, both Mario and I have placed orders for the coming seasons. They first opened in Australia way back in April 2014. If you are keen for a throwback blog post, you can check out my first blog post featuring Uniqlo here and the second here. How long was my hair?! Among others, I’ve since shared my love of the Uniqlo premium linen’s back here. I’ve worn a Uniqlo wool skirt to MBFWA here and talked about stocking up on essential staples here. Safe to say, I had been waiting for the Perth Uniqlo store to open for years!
UNIQLO OPENS IN PERTH AT LONG LAST
I’ve visited them interstate (there are now 13 Australian stores) and overseas- even at the last minute in the airport before hopping onto my flight. At last count, there were over twenty Uniqlo pieces in my pretty curated closet! They are just so reliable and affordable that I go back time and time again. Actually, an easy to get to Perth store might be a bit too helpful for me! haha. Time will tell. For now, though, I can assure you that I have tried and tested plenty of Uniqlo essentials and can happily recommend them to you. Described as ‘Lifewear’ Uniqlo’s designs are thoughtful and innovative. They have developed amazing fabrications and create wearable pieces that are affordable, versatile and stylish.
Below, I put together three looks with the pieces I picked up last Friday night in store at Uniqlo Perth. The store itself is huge, over two levels, stocked with the Uniqlo favourites. Walls of premium linen, plenty of the Ultra Light Down options, piles of denim, knits, rayon and sections for Heattech, innerwear and so much more. You probably believe me at this point when I say that I was in there for over two and a half hours and tried on just under 20 pieces.
Loco for Uniqlo? Who, me?
LOOK 1: ULTRA LIGHT DOWN AND U-CREW T-SHIRT
WEARING: U CREW T-SHIRT IN STRIPED (ALSO COMES LOTS OF PLAIN COLOURS), ULTRA STRETCH JEANS, ULTRA LIGHT DOWN PARKA
I’ve had one of the Ultra Light Down Vests for a couple of years now. So, naturally, I wanted to pick up one of the parkas. The ULD range is super lightweight, made with premium down, and can be stuffed into a carry pouch, making them perfect to travel with. They are also water-repellent which I tested out while setting up my tripod to shoot these photos. It began to rain on me straight away! I opted for black (classic Jenelle) but was surprised by how many colour options were available too!
Though I have yet to go to the snow, we recommended our friends wait till they got to Japan to buy any jackets, telling them to go to Uniqlo for one of the ULD ones instead of lugging something from Australia with them. Years later, they still let us know how grateful they were for that advice, as the jackets ended up being perfect for their ski Japan trip.
WEARING: DENIM JACKET, RAYON BLOUSE, ULTRA STRETCH JEANS
A white denim jacket had been on my list to pick up for a while, since I have a few blue and black options already and realised how much wear I got out of them. This was the first thing I saw when I got into the store that I put right into my basket. I opted for a size up (to a small) for a larger fit. It’ll be perfect over my summer dresses or styled back with black jeans as I did here. Double denim!
This rayon top was not something I’d usually go for but I liked the idea of something that could be dressy or casual. Making a change from my usual collection of t-shirts, this will be easy to travel with, given it is wrinkle-resistant and machine washable.
LOOK 3: LINEN AND DENIM
WEARING: PREMIUM LINEN CHECK SHIRT, ULTRA STRETCH JEANS
Since I have already dedicated a blog post to Uniqlo’s range of premium linens (back here) I am not going to go into that again. It was obvious to me that I’d end up with another linen shirt in my basket! Instead, let’s talk Uniqlo denim.
My first foray into the Uniqlo denim range was with a pair of their denim leggings in 2015. I had landed in Paris, having donated my go-to black skinny jeans to charity while in Morocco and decided to grab a replacement pair before my flight home. Last month I finally retired them after non-stop wears for three years. They had faded a bit and it was time for a new pair but only just. They held up so so well! This time I picked up a black and a light blue pair. I find that I size down in Uniqlo jeans. These are both a roomy size 24, but I think I could go down to a 23. In Levi’s jeans, I am usually a size 25. The blue pair is a 33-inch length, but I have to fold them up a bit, given I am not so tall (163cm).
If you have never shopped at Uniqlo and are ready to go into the Perth store, let me know! Have any questions on what to try? The prices are very affordable and everything I have ever bought has lasted me years. Mario just placed another big order before the Perth store opened too. He has a lot of Uniqlo in his wardrobe if you are shopping for menswear and have questions, leave them in the comments below.
