My favourites from La Mer, a skin care brand I have been using for the last year. All of the products you need to know about and what they can do to transform your skin.
REDUCING MY BEAUTY PRODUCTS
I recently went through my house and re-culled. Anything I haven’t really been using or had doubled up on, I gave away and now have one side of my desk drawers holding all of my makeup. I get sent a lot of beauty products, and I take my time to try them before I ever share the favourites on either my blog or Instagram. Now when I open my drawer or my bathroom cupboard I see only the products I love.
Which is why sometimes I look at my bathroom counter and think it looks like a La Mer beauty counter! Now, they are luxury products so they are definitely an investment in your skin. As long as you see the value in luxury skin care you will understand. While I have used these on and off since last year, about a month ago I switched to only using La Mer (except for cleansing- I am using the Eve Lom cleanser). My skin has been more balanced and glowing than ever. My forehead is not as oily or shiny and my under eye bags are less obvious.
WHY LA MER?
La Mer has a really interesting history. I dug a little to find out more about the founder and ingredients and just grew more excited about the brand.
The key ingredient La Mer is known for is sea kelp. The famous La Mer “miracle broth” (which is in each product) is made by combining sea kelp with other potent ingredients and infusing them with energies of light and sound to intensify activity until they became a rich fermentation. The sea kelp is carefully harvested by hand from the top layer in the nutrient-rich waters off the coast of Vancouver Island in Canada. La Mer goes to great lengths to ensure it is harvested sustainably, as the kelp is home to an eco-system.
So, who came up with the idea of using sea kelp to create an incredible line of skincare? I feel like that is some left of field creative thinking!
THE STORY OF THE LA MER MIRACLE BROTH
Dr. Max Huber, a German-born aerospace physicist, suffered severe burns in a lab explosion in the 1950s while working on a rocket stabilizer. He spent 12 years experimenting with Macrocystis pyrifera, a variety of sea kelp found near his California home. Dr. Huber finally created an elixir that healed his wounds and restored his skin to such health that all evidence of the accident was erased. So, basically, he created a skin care miracle! In the articles I have read about Huber- he was a pretty interesting guy and it was easy to see why La Mer soon had a cult-line-up-around-the-block following.
To create the miracle broth, Dr. Huber fermented each batch of kelp in a fish tank for three months while continuously playing a soundtrack recording of the previous fermentation—and exposing it to pulsed light. Sound waves (sonochemistry) can act as catalysts to speed up the chemical reactions that occur during fermentation. By playing the original sound waves during every fermentation and seeding every batch with a culture of the previous batch, like a yogurt or kombucha (hands up who else brews their own? I drink a glass every day!), a continuous strain runs through every La Mer product. So clever and cool, right?!
THE LA MER PRODUCTS I USE AND LOVE
Thus far I have yet to try any cleansing products, so my La Mer skin care routine starts post-cleanse. As you may have read before I am a HUGE cleanser/ exfoliator person, so I am eager to try the Replenishing Oil Exfoliator and The Cleansing Gel soon. If you have tried either, please let me know your thoughts on them below! I have also tried all of the moisturisers so the rundown of each is below.
One of the newest items in my collection, The Mist is seriously dreamy. It smells like roses! I use this post-cleanse, after time in the sun or just when I need a refresh. The highly charged waters in the mist help heal, hydrate and rebalance your skin. The Mist creates a special negative ion-rich environment that instantly shifts skin’s energy level, visibly uplifting and reviving lethargic skin. A live internal magnet continually recharges the ingredients to maintain their optimum potency. I swear this is all so clever!
From memory, the first La Mer product I tried was the La Mer Treatment Lotion. The Treatment Lotion deeply hydrates and evens my skin tone. I apply this post-mist before moisturising and a couple of drops is enough- I just press it onto my skin gently. Like “liquid energy”, the silky hydrator visibly awakens the complexion and drives moisture deep into the skin to improve texture and even tone.
The La Mer Eye Concentrate is one of those things I look forward to applying each evening. I do a little ritual eye massage using the silver tipped applicator from La Mer. It helps with puffiness, fine lines and dark circles, but most of all I find it relaxing. It helps me to get ready to sleep and I when I wake up I can really see the results.
EYE BALM INTENSE:
I also have the Eye Balm Intense which I tend to use in the mornings. The intensive balm utilises three unique formulas of Miracle Broth™ and an exclusive marine ferment to energise the skin. Suspended with a mesh-like sea gel, the Marine De-Puff Ferment™ works with a rare tourmaline to deeply condition, smooth and hydrate the delicate eye area. My eyes have always been puffy and the skin around your eyes is so delicate I make sure to give them extra love.

THE MOISTURIZING COOL GEL CREAM:
I was super excited when La Mer brought out the new Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream! This cooling gel is soothing and perfectly refreshing. It is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive. I use this each morning, the cool feeling wakes me up and after sun, my skin loves the feeling. I actually wish this was around earlier. When I was a teenager I vaguely remember having a gel moisturiser and I loved that one, so maybe this is part nostalgia. Either way, it is my daily moisturiser.
THE MOISTURIZING MATTE CREAM:
The mini bottle of this I had was incredible! The Moisturizing Matte Lotion defies the laws of moisture with renewing hydration from Miracle Broth™ and a unique mattifying technology, to help soften away age, shine and pores. For anyone who tends to get an oily forehead like me, this was perfect to create a balanced complexion. It is not heavy at all either. I sometimes just used this one on my forehead and nose, then patted the Cool Gel Cream to the rest of my face. I say ‘used’ because I used this up super fast!
THE MOISTURIZING SOFT CREAM:
The Moisturizing Soft Cream delivers the same radiance and renewal that made the original Crème de la Mer a legend in a more supple texture. It really is a soft, silky texture. Infused with the nutrient-rich Miracle Broth™, it penetrates deeply to replenish moisture and strengthen skin. This is what I use most nights before going to bed. I swap and use the Crème de la Mer a few nights a week if I want a different texture. Either way, I wake up with hydrated and balanced skin and to be honest I love them both.
THE MOISTURIZING SOFT LOTION:
I had a small bottle of The Moisturizing Soft Lotion and it treated me well (it didn’t last long!). Smooth and silky, the Moisturizing Soft Lotion reimagines the legendary formula in a bold new formula. Perfect to pop in my handbag for a wave of continuous moisture. I pat a small amount between fingertips to release the Miracle Broth™ and press gently into skin. It is also handy to reapply on flights. Planes are soooooo dehydrating!
CRÈME DE LA MER ULTRARICH CREAM:
The original! Crème de la Mer is a luxuriously rich cream that deeply soothes, moisturises and renews away dryness. Every time I show this one to someone they are like “Ohhhhhh it’s so incredible!!” In a short time it firms, improves lines, wrinkles and the look of pores become less visible so your skin looks virtually ageless. The formula is ideal for drier skin, so I tend to reserve it for a few nights a week and use it post flights.
The secret to activating the Miracle Broth™ in Crème de la Mer lies in the application. I warm it for a few seconds between my fingers until it becomes translucent, then press gently into the skin. Heaven. Seriously, it is the most luxurious and beautiful mosituriser I will ever use!

SOFT FLUID LONG WEAR FOUNDATION SPF 20:
Blends soft colour, renewing hydration and Miracle Broth. The Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation SPF 20 makes pores look refined, while imperfections virtually disappear. SPF and antioxidants help to protect a flawless complexion. This foundation is pure magic. It is long-wearing and hydrating, I never have a shiny forehead wearing it, something that happens with almost all other foundations toward the afternoon.
SHEER PRESSED POWDER:
To finish off and lightly set my foundation, I dust on a little of the La Mer Sheer Pressed Powder. The powder helps create a matte but not pore-clogging finish that lasts all day and night. Light-reflecting pigments create a soft blurring effect for a multi-dimensional look that’s matte and shine free. Perfect for normal to oily skin like mine!
THE LUMINOUS LIFTING CUSHION FOUNDATION SPF 20:
Newest in the range is the incredible Luminous Lifting Cushion Foundation SPF 20. It is all about a quick-touch, buildable coverage with a naturally radiant finish. With renewing hydration from Miracle Broth and colour capsule technology the foundation gives skin a lift of luminosity. The compact comes in a leather case, it is the perfect size for your bag or travel. The sponge and its applicator puff deliver just the right amount without wastage for a fresh, flawless look and a plump, firm feel. Plus it has SPF 20, which we all need. I have been using this one a lot since it arrived, as it is just so convenient and non-messy. The cushion is so damn cool!!
THE BRONZING POWDER:
This year’s limited edition Bronzing Powder is my new favourite bronzer. Infused with nutrient-rich Miracle Broth™, the silky pressed powder creates the look of a glimmering sun-kissed glow. I have been using it every day since it arrived and I love that people have made so many comments on how happy, glowing and well rested I have been looking. It might be taking time offline to see family, read and my daily workout or it might be this!

HAVE YOU TRIED LA MER?
It is no doubt easy to see by now that there has not been a La Mer product that I didn’t love. I am super lucky to have clear skin but I am very particular my routine too. Luxury products like these are definitely an investment but I find a little goes a long way and personally my skin is something I invest in. While I may not personally be into clinical cosmetic procedures (they are just not for me), I do want to take care of my skin day-to-day at home.
