How to invest in your wardrobe and make your fashion choices go further.
It is all too tempting to run out and drop your hard earned on whatever takes your fancy. However, it is much smarter to shop cleverly and invest in the pieces that will be there for you for years. Trust me on this one when you find out how old these shoes are!
WHY SHOULD YOU INVEST IN FASHION?
I ventured out yesterday to do a bit of shopping and came back empty handed. Nothing I saw felt entirely like it would fit into my wardrobe equation. Going back to my capsule wardrobe, it is vital that an item I choose to invest in will be able to work with a number of other things I own. For example a shirt must go with a heap of jacket options to mix and match. This Uniqlo shirt I am wearing does the trick (despite retailing for under $40!).
As you can see in these outfits, I can take the same jeans, heels and shirt from a casual look to one that feels a little more meeting appropriate. For getting down to business, I would ditch the leather jacket and opt for a blazer.
This is where my equations come in:
button down shirt + pump heel + torn jean = meetings
button down shirt + pump heel + torn jean + scarf + leather moto jacket = casual coffee date
Before I go to shop for something new, I scan over what is working in my wardrobe and look for any gaps. At the moment my biggest gaps are dresses and I am craving colour. Spring is on my mind! Though again, I am thinking of my investments when it comes to what I buy. In doing the scan, I hit the shops with a rough plan and avoid impulse purchases.
I get such good wear out of some items, that I am drawn to investing in another piece almost exactly the same! Of course, until an item actually falls apart or no longer fits, I refrain from investing in a new one. Unless you really need to, I would advise not spending your money doubling up! Instead move on to another item on your list.
Getting back to the look I am wearing, this leather biker jacket I bought at least five years ago and it is buttery soft now. I think the hardware is a little too bright but I am yet to set aside the dollars for another one. Until I do, it gets a lot of use. You may have seen it over the years paired with dresses, layered with a sweater or worn with culottes. Are you sick of it yet?
I just had these pump heels repaired, I have again, had them for EVER! Actually, I bought these off of eBay straight after the MBFW presentation in New York in 2007. Clearly, that investment has lasted a long time! If you find something that works for your style my best advice is to fix them before you replace them. Good quality items that are kept in good condition- repaired, cleaned and stored correctly will last you forever.
Do you have a favourite piece that you wear again and again? What is it? Let me know!
Now, it is probably easy to see why I take my time making decisions when I go shopping!! You can shop my look below with some high and low priced options. Do you use a similar fashion equation when deciding what to wear?
