Gymnastics classes at Movement Co are one of my favourite workouts.
YES I LOVE GYMNASTICS (NO I AM NOT A GYMNAST)
Throughout this year I have been going to gymnastics classes at Movement Co, in Osborne Park. It has to be one of my favourite workouts so I thought it was about time I shared! Categorised as strength training, the gymnastics classes are all about mobility, flexibility and of course strength building.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MOVEMENT CO
Movement Co is an adult gym which specialises in movement, teaching gymnastics, calisthenics, hand-balancing, climbing and parkour. The space also has weights and so on so you can pop in to do your own workout.
GYMNASTICS THE MOVEMENT CO WAY
The gymnastics area features 6 sets of high rings, 8 sets of lower practice rings, a 15m long handstand wall, a 50sqm bamboo locomotion and hand balancing floor and a number of sets of parallettes. Classes focus on static positions, upper body pressing, upper body pulling and core training. Essentially the classes train progressions towards the following movements or areas of study:
- Levers – side, front and back
- Muscle ups
- Rope climbs
- Freestanding handstands
- Single leg squats
If like me, you have NO IDEA when it comes to gymnastics, some of those terms may mean absolutely nothing to you. When I first started I had no clue at all what a planche was nor had I ever tried to rope climb without using my legs. (Both are not easy! Hence why the classes work toward those movements). It doesn’t matter what your ability or age, the classes are taught with different options for each exercise depending on level of strength or ability.
HOW HAVE I FOUND THE CLASSES?
Gymnastics classes themselves are a lot of fun. You don’t repeat the same activities all that often, there are so many fun warm ups, exercises and activities. The classes can get tough, man, really tough. There have been times in which I didn’t think I’d get as far through the circuits as I did. Actually, there have even been moments where I surprised not only myself, but our coach Mat.
While I am on the subject, Mat is actually one of the best people I have met in a good many years. I don’t say that lightly, either. True, I meet lovely people all the time. Honestly though, few of those people get me thinking about bigger issues and life in general as Mat does. Often when working on a new progression, something unlocks mentally as well as physically. I have never left a class not thinking happier nor fuller thoughts.
Everyone in the classes pairs up at some point, so it becomes a social place, where everyone looks out for one another and shows support.
WHAT HAVE THE CLASSES DONE FOR ME?
Over the months I have come to see some obvious improvements in my own strength, flexibility and mobility. Though I am not in class as often as I would like to be, I try to at least get in once a week. When I have gone more times per week of course, I see huge shifts in my progressions.
The training done at Movement Co is not all about losing weight fast or building quick muscles. Rather, the programs are designed to improve your body bit by bit. For me, this has meant that my back has began to strengthen (I have scoliosis), which is highest on my list of priorities.
I want to build a stronger body that will carry me through the years to come.
