Why having a gratitude buddy is making me happier everyday.
“The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for goodness.” — Dalai Lama
Happy weekend all! I hope it has treated you well. Today I wanted to share something I have began doing that has made me feel SUPER happy. It is free, easy and brings you closer to a friend.
Making time to think about what you are grateful for is such an important and rewarding thing to do. Focusing on what makes you happy- be it a big or a small thing can make you happier! When I notice myself starting to wear my busy schedule like a badge of honour, I know I need to slow down. Making a conscious choice to focus on what makes me happy feels a lot better than stressing out over my busy schedule. Over the past few weeks I have really made this a priority.
MY GRATITUDE BUDDY
My friend Adelle and I have started this thing where we message each other three things we are grateful for each day. I was writing my own gratitude list each day, but I thought it’d be good to have a buddy to remind me everyday. It’s been great to share what is going on and keep each other accountable.
Sharing in the big and the little things is really important. I have been able to share how proud I am of things that have happened for Adelle. Sometimes it is just sharing the smaller things like how grateful we are for a good cup of coffee. At other times it is sharing BIG breakthroughs and inspirations.
WHY BOTHER NOTING WHAT YOU ARE GRATEFUL FOR?
Being grateful and taking time to think about what you are thankful for will give you a chance to realise what is most important. If you are thinking about positive things each day, it will help banish the negative thoughts when they pop up. Actually, if I start my day thinking about what I am grateful for, I keep noticing more things through out the day.
JUST AS GOOD AS A GUCCI BAG
Instead of thinking about what shoes or handbag I wish I had, switching my thoughts to really appreciating small things has made a difference. Sure, I still want a Gucci bag, but I am so happy for healthy food, a good conversation, pushing myself further in a workout etc. Besides this, thinking about who I am grateful to be around, to cultivate the relationships I have is far more rewarding. It also means I feel less FOMO when I see someone with a killer Gucci bag! Because I have plenty of incredible things happening in my life everyday. :)
GRATEFUL FOR INSPIRATION
On Friday I invited my friend to a screening of Ron Howard’s Eight Days A Week, The Beatles new documentary. Knowing she was a huge Beatles fan. We hadn’t seen each other in a long time. She seemed like she had a lot on her plate. It wasn’t until after the film when I saw her face lit up that she told me she’d been so busy that she had hardly listened to them. When you know someone is so fuelled by an artist, you want them to channel that inspiration! I could not picture her not listening to The Beatles! I was so grateful that she came to see the film with me and left on such a high. Sharing that was even more special (plus the film was great!).
“When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.” — Willie Nelson
I know Adelle would appreciate my quoting Willie Nelson to finish off this story! Also I hope taking time out to think about what you are grateful for, can bring you a lot of happiness. Please let me know if you already do this everyday? Do you have a gratitude buddy? Inspired to ask someone to be yours? Trust me it is a lot of fun!
