Three key tips on how to style a feminine ruffle skirt without getting too girly. The chic way to nail feminine style with an edge just in time for the feminine Spring 16 trends.
Let’s talk about feminine style for a couple of minutes. Trust me, when the warmer weather hits you are going to be thinking about how to nail it. Feminine style may not be what you associate me with (or even yourself?), but as much as I love my denim jeans and tomboy looks, I do love a little ruffle sometimes.
WHY FEMININE STYLE?
A feminine look is ultimately an easy win. A crowd pleaser, a chic, feminine style will always be flattering and go over well in any situation. While you may be like me and not always appreciate that attention (I consider myself a little too bad ass to be flattered for a ruffle compliment), it is a pretty good feeling every now and again. This season, we will be seeing blush tones, ruffles, paisley and a heck of a lot of florals. You can thank the arty-intellectual Gucci collections for this.
TIP #1: GO EASY
While you may feel like slipping into a trend head to toe, as with anything, moderation is key. Stick to understated accessories. Don’t make the eye work its way up, down, left and right, bouncing around in confusion for which piece is screaming the loudest. If you go with a feminine skirt or dress, opt for a simple heel and a chic bag in a neutral shade.
Still want to add something extra interesting to keep the look polished? Reach for a gold or silver earring. Fine or large and bold, the earring can make enough of a statement without confusing the eye. In the look I have on here, I am VERY day-time. Pairing this ruffle skirt with a silk button down shirt, statement earrings and simple chic heels would take this into an evening look instantly.
TIP #2: DENIM JACKETS ARE YOUR FRIEND
Denim jackets and leather moto jackets are your friend. Take a feminine dress and pair it back with a jacket that borrows from a traditional man-style to toughen up the look. Denim and leather always ground a feminine fabric like silk, chiffon or rayon. Unless you want to embrace a completely girly look with a cardigan, opt for a thicker fabric like denim or leather. I use this one a lot.
TIP #3 GROUND IT WITH A BOOT
This is my number one tip! Nine times out of ten, this is the option I will reach for. Even in the height of sweltering summer. A leather boot makes me instantly feel a little more boss and less girly. It may not be for everyone, nor every occasion but personally, this is where it’s at for me. I’ve worn a feminine dress and boots to weddings and all over when I travel.
Below I have found a few options for shopping this look, the skirt I am wearing is from Stevie May, one of my absolute favourite Australian brands. I am obsessed!! This look from MBFWA is a similar example, opting for a white silk dress and boots. Have a feminine style or bohemian brand you love to wear? Let me know!!
