Can you tell I have been watching Seinfeld? 90’s menswear inspirations and the essential blazer that I am in love with.
I’ve always had this love of menswear, perhaps as a kind of anti dressing hugely feminine. It just seems cooler to me to have a exaggerated, boxy cut, be it for a shirt, pants or coat. The blazer, I probably (like many other children) started wearing as a part of my school uniform. That essential blazer in blue, made of wool, kept us warm all winter long. The long pleated skirt on the other hand I am all too happy to forget (damn that thing was ugly!).
THE ESSENTIAL BLAZER
Though preppy, the blazer is one of those coats I love to throw on over anything. It sharpens up an otherwise casual look, and makes for a change rather than wearing a leather moto jacket with everything (something I can be guilty of!). Perhaps it has been through watching Seinfeld, but I largely think that the check houndstooth blazer I picked up at the Perth GPO H&M launch was inspired by the likes of Dianne Keaton in Annie Hall. Or Katherine Hepburn or Lauren Hutton.
THE KEY TO THE RIGHT ONE
The blazer, is one of those essential pieces that stand the test of time. Worn over and over, loved, relied upon, a blazer is something to consider investing in and taking care of. Not that you have to spend a lot of money on one. I think if you can find something that you have invested thought into, that fits you just right and will be flexible with other items in your closet, you are on the right track.
So, tell me, do you wear blazers? When a friend of mine years ago told me she hated them, I was super shocked and still am. How could you not?! To each their own though. Would be keen to hear your thoughts below! Love or hate?
