Turns out, I am as shocked as you are. Though it is probably a phase, lately I have actually liked the feeling of dressing up.
TAKE A CHANCE ‘CAUSE YOU MIGHT GROW
Shut my eyes can’t find the break, was the name of my original blog. Taken from song lyrics, it reflected how overwhelmed but excited I was feeling. At the time, some seven years ago now, I was finishing up my studies, when a friend suggested I start blogging. I had plenty of ideas but got stuck on a name. Being a music lover, something that I turn to whenever I am struggling is music.
The lyrics from Gwen Stefani’s song ‘What You Waiting For’ stuck with me. As did the video clip to match. In the video, Gwen, who is faced with writing her first solo record, is struggling with writer’s block, saying she is going to do it but needs to get inspired first. Eventually, Gwen heads along to a “Busting Writer’s Block” class. Of course, the lyrics that follow air her worries that she is scared to go out on her own, it is all happening too fast. This is where the lyrics “Shut my eyes, can’t find the break” came from. Ultimately though, Gwen has to try.
“Who cares, cause it’s your life, you never know it could be great!”
DEALING WITH WRITER’S BLOCK
It happens to the best of us, writer’s block. Though I have a ridiculous list of blog post ideas, sometimes they just don’t fit in well with some of the locations or looks I shoot. Of course, that is, when things don’t go according to my carefully made plans. :) This happens to all of us too. And that is okay.
Anyway, there I was, facing a few drafted stories with little idea of what to write. No matter how I looked at it, the inspiration wasn’t coming. So, I decided to look back over my archives.
Looking at my archives of old posts, which, for a little trivia, goes as far back as 2010, I remembered something…
I LIKE TO DRESS DOWN ANYTHING!
For any occasion, I have always naturally wanted to feel comfortable, a little edgy, and never overdone. Be they formal occasions, weddings or cocktail events, I have always considered how to dress down my outfit a little.
I recall an old joke between my best friend and I that we would go to a party with an event in mind to say we had just come from first, in case we arrived and both looked overdressed.
“We just came from our other friend’s engagement party, hence being so dressed up!” etc
This ended up happening to us both on several occasions. I should point out here that we often went to parties hosted by the kind of people who gave little thought to fashion. In fact, I recall being asked by people directly, why I wanted to put so much money into the hands of these designers?!
Each to their own.
After a while, I began to want to naturally dress down, so as to not feel ashamed of being overdressed. It had gotten embarrassing.
HEELS OVER SNEAKERS? WHO AM I?
When thinking of what to write for this blog post, sharing this beautiful dress from one of my favourite designers, Laura Egloff (who you saw me wearing back here and here), I got stuck. Rather than my usual dressed-down option, I had clearly gone for it. Heels over ankle boots or sneakers? Who, me?!!
DRESSING UP IS OKAY TOO
Maybe this is just a phase, but, I actually liked dressing up! It is okay to do it every now and again. Forget about what people might say or if they will pass judgement. Life, after all, is made better when we take chances.
Just remember what Gwen had to say:
Life is short, you’re capable!
