Yes, I am addicted to wearing the same things again and again. Here is why (and a few closet secrets for good measure). Just call me denim and stripes addicted.
Seen it all before? Yep, most definitely. Here is the low down on how I sort out my wardrobe and figure out my style.
TIME TO CLEAN OUT YOUR WARDROBE
Now that we are well into the second week of Spring in Australia, I hope that you have all done a bit of a Spring Clean. For you guys heading into Fall, now is also an excellent time to get into your wardrobe. Take an hour or so and sort out what you do and don’t need to hold onto. Actually, since you are heading into Winter, finding things you do not need but can donate to a charity clothing place is perfect. Particularly any old coats or knits. These can go to someone who will need them to get through the cold months ahead.
THE BENEFITS OF SORTING OUT YOUR CLOSET
The change in seasons is really the best time to get stuck into what no longer fits, or could be loved more by someone else. It will leave you with an idea of what you have to work with already. Notice if there are gaps so you can have those in mind before you shop. (Reduce impulse buying as much as you can!). You can also work out pretty quickly what you do and don’t love wearing. So you get a clearer idea of your personal style.
If you didn’t have time last weekend, you are in luck, we are headed into a new weekend! Woohoo! Already did it? How GOOD does it feel? Did anyone else make the mistake of putting bags of donations together and forget to drop them off? Uh, it’s a trap! Best make sure you get them out of the house/ boot of the car this weekend! I will if you do! Promise?
DENIM AND STRIPES ADDICTED
Hmm, my addiction. It is totally normal, right? Below I will break down how my wardrobe is organised so you may see how this outfit repeating occurs. While also sharing that I own things you saw on The Nanny. Yep. True story.
I AM A ROBOT
Exactly how many times I have worn these pieces I have on here, I could not tell you. Each are pretty standard go-to pieces for me. I thought I should share how I sort out my wardrobe with you. It is all organised into colour and clothing type. It’s pretty amusing to see all together. By which I mean, there are clear patterns. So, basically I am a robot. Or a cartoon. :)
MY WARDROBE BREAKDOWN:
Colour order: white, blue and black for each category (unless stated otherwise).
Denim & leather jackets> blazers> tops> stripe tops and dresses> lace dresses/ skirts> dresses> skirts> grey dresses> pink dresses> black pants> assorted printed & coloured dresses/ playsuits /shorts.
That is about it. It is almost all the same colours for each category.
OKAY, I AM NOT A ROBOT
The print section and colour sections are pretty limited. However, I still own a few random items like a red pair of shorts. While they stick out like a sore thumb, they are made of the softest wool and I could not part with them. Hey, if it worked for Mickey Mouse..! Plus I have a couple of metallic Ellery skirts I just love. Oh and the odd vintage Moschino items that were actually worn by Fran Drescher on The Nanny. Random, but I love them, they are so crazy!
This basically proves that, though I wear the same things most of the time, I am not a total robot, or cartoon. I know that they say people wear about 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time. Honestly, I have made damn sure that the things I do wear ALL the time are great quality. Besides, I have made sure that I wear more like 60% of my clothes all the time, rather than 20%. It meant parting with things I didn’t need and I feel much lighter for it.
ADDRESSING THE STRIPES AND DENIM JACKET ADDICTION
My denim jackets are all pretty similar, but cut differently. My stripe tops and dresses are all more or less alike but just a little different. These are all made of great quality wool or cotton and serve me so so well. I can easily mix and match them with my other capsule wardrobe items. For me, it works.
What have you found that works for you? What are some of the key things you own and repeat wear? Do you have a few of almost the same pieces?
Are you sick of my stripes? Go on, be brutal! :)
